Can you Tap Dance on PVC Vinyl? (aka Matlay)
Since Tap Dancers have been dancing on Vinyl only in recent years the verdict is not out yet.
However, we have experienced no repercussions so far, other than the zinc oxide residue left from aluminum taps.
In our main studio showroom here at Alvas, we have a beautiful 55 year old solid maple wood floor.
It is mostly covered with Matlay (Alvas version of PVC vinyl aka "Marley"). When Tap Dancers come in
to experience tapping on Matlay, they first try the hardwood floor and then jump on the Matlay.
To their surprise they could not tell the difference.
I know that the vinyl will take away some of the high frequencies in the tap sound but
there is so much change in “tone” from shoe to shoe, studio to studio and theatre to
theatre that this very slight difference in “tone” to us is not an issue.
Tap shoes with rubber soles may stick too much for some. Leather soles seem to mate better
with Vinyl (a happy medium between too slippery and too sticky).
Like Flamenco, Folklorical, Clogging, Irish step, etc........ sounds made by the feet are a part of their Dance.
Lay down Matlay and tap away.
